To Be?

Dark plumes in blackest night
waft silently thru vaults
Of ebon velvet;
Fright enters not, the eerie salts
Of uneasiness corrode peace of mind. Whenever
ill swells and bad smells bode one seek flight forever
yearning toward that place of happy contentment
known so well and in pace with freedom from torment,
one sits up nights thinking, trying to reconcile
fact and fancy, blinking sore eyes, wading the pile
of prickly tormenting aggravation, the Guile.

Foursquare stand I in the midst of burning fever,
sweltering heat, murderous fires.
Life goes on, hate, jealousy, greed, concerning its
Self only with continuation.
Foursquare, there, sinking, but standing, sickening, but
Churning away, trying to be.
The elements, blindly, seemingly, strike down all
our attempts to build us a house.
To what lengths will Man go to try to be,
while in the end his fate is not to be?
You see, Man knows not that he is not to be, He
has always been, always will be.

Image power as in a furnace nuclear
Tremendous force, energy - contained... leashed
Fierce fires banked to stay cool
lest tongues of flame escape
and upon return inflict pain

Fires banked for want of a place immune to heat
so intense it would melt even the strongest steel

banked for protection of delicate things
which cannot dwell with fierceness; flowers:
soft things which perish without gentle care
and lovingkindess. Yet the fire burns within
imprisoned, shrinking from the very thought
of release

On top of old smoky sat a cat and a bear.
Says the bear to cat, what a fine coat of hair!
Says the cat to the bear, don't you dare, don't you dare!
Bear, all sure of himself, said, that's not fair.
The cat, faster than a rat, said, Au Contraire.
Bear moved, and Cat disappeared into thin air.
Bear looked around, but all that he found was a wisp of cat's hair.
Cat sat in a tree, happy as could be, and that's all we know of the
pair.
